Oracy
The English Speaking Union is the world-leading organisation in the development of oracy in young people. Founded in 1918, its distinguished alumni include some of our most successful politicians and business leaders. The ESU runs national and global public speaking and debating competitions.
We believe passionately in the development of oracy in young people of school age. Debating and public speaking equip them with the “toolkit” to navigate their lives and achieve their goals. These are also the skills that help them to aim for Oxbridge and from there have the possibility to develop and promote their own businesses.
We proposed and fund the Rutland Teachers’ Award, a new annual award that is given to the teacher who is voted as the most dedicated to helping their pupils succeed in ESU competitions. The award fits within our core remit of supporting those great teachers who support young peoples’ aspirations. Teacher support is crucial to pupils making the most of the opportunities offered by the ESU.
The first award will be handed out at the Wrench Lecture at Dartmouth House in Mayfair in October 2024, in the presence of Lord Patten.
